Madonna and Child between St Peter and St Lucy, 1318, tempera on panel

Horne, who bought the painting in 1906, thought it was referable to Buffalmacco: he believed in fact that the painting had been carried out for the Badia a Settimo, where Buffalmacco had worked on the Spini Chapel. Then, the work was referred to the Master of Santa Cecilia. Finally, the panel has been identified as the antique altarpiece commissioned by the Albizi family to Lippo di Benivieni for their chapel in San Pier Maggiore, dedicated to Saint Lucy. The painting documents a Florentine Pictorial current of the early 14th century which, even if bearing in mind Giotto’s teaching, developed in the wake of the expressive and moving tradition of the previous century.
