Cradle, second half of the 16th century, carved walnut

A cradle was purpose-built for a given child’s birth, wealthy families often commissioning not only a cradle for daily use but also a “show cradle” for use on official occasions such the newborn babe’s introduction to society. This cradle, meticulously carved with subjects alluding to the birth and to the family’s importance, is a perfect example of the latter.
