Chair “a iccasse”, late 16th century, carved beech wood
The chair consists of a system of slats mounted by scissors and stopped by pins according to the type called in Tuscany “a iccasse” (i.e., “x” shaped, because of the pattern that is determined). It presents a typology that was defined during the 15th century in the context of communal seating and spread throughout much of continental Europe. Foldable, as in the case of the so-called Savonarola, it does not usually feature prominent decorative elements, being strongly characterized by the pattern determined by the concatenation of the slats, accentuated by the narrow seat placed particularly high up.
