Antonio Rossellino
Madonna of the Candlesticks, second half of the 15th century, polychrome stucco bas-relief

This work, whose provenance was the Church of Sant’ Jacopo alla Cavallina at Barberino di Mugello, can be connected with the famous series of Marian depictions known by the name of The Madonna of the Candelabras, from the precious motif which decorates the background. Critics have attributed to Antonio Rossellino the invention of the model and the paternity of those works in stucco and terracotta, among them the Horne’s bas-relief, which are distinguished by their high technical quality and praiseworthy original polychrome.
