Paris Reclining, c. 1450, tempera on panel
This painting is a rare evidence of the figures that could be found inside 15th century Florentine wedding chests as seen on this lid that has reached us in the shape of a painting. As the inscription indicates, the reclining figure is identifiable as Paris, whose companion was probably the female figure of Helen, painted inside the lid of the other chest, a companion to this one.
