Strozzi Stools, first half of the 16th century (?), inlaid and carved walnut

Stools with backs were extremely common in the Renaissance. Originating in lower class homes, they were very much in use also in more affluent homes thanks to the solidity and functionality of their design. The pair known as the “Strozzi stools”, with the family coat-of-arms carved at the top of the stools back, rest on three uprights to ensure stability even on the uneven floors of the period.
