Jacopo Sansovino
Madonna and Child, first half of the 16th century, pietra serena bas-relief

The work was bequeathed to the Horne Museum, along with others, in 1961 by Count Carlo Gamba, the first president of the Foundation of the same name, in memory of his mother Countess Eufrosina Damiani Caselli, who had discovered the relief in an outbuilding of the family-owned villa Il Neto di Settimello in Calenzano (Florence) in the late 19th century. It is a bas-relief attributed to Jacopo Sansovino, which is, however, at the center of a controversial debate, both concerning its author and its dating.
